This station became operational on November 17, 2009 primarily as a hobby and began publishing data to the various networks soon there after. My hope is for this website to become a useful and valued public service for the local area. This weather information comes to you from the population center of Moab as apposed to the official station at the airport. The problem with the airport is its location. At 18 miles by road from  downtown Moab, it sees very different conditions than here in the valley some of the time so I hope this station, located 4 miles South of downtown, will help fill that gap. Another benefit is the ability to view near live conditions with update intervals as fast as every 3 seconds thanks to Weather Underground's Rapid Fire system.

This station sends data to the CWOP program (more on that below). The data is quality control checked against predicted values based upon the analysis of data from other area weather stations.

The data is also QC checked by the MADIS system and MesoWest.

About CWOP from the CWOP home page

"The Citizen Weather Observer Program (CWOP) is a private-public partnership with three main goals: 1) to collect weather data contributed by citizens; 2) to make these data available for weather services and homeland security; and 3) to provide feedback to the data contributors so that they have the tools to check and improve their data quality. In fact, the web address, wxqa.com, stands for weather quality assurance.

There are over 8,000 registered CWOP members world wide and a graph of the number of North American CWOP stations sending data over the past four days is shown under the older name APRSWXNET. The number of world-wide citizen weather stations sending data through APRS-IS (Internet-Service) is shown for the past six years.

CWOP members send their weather data by internet alone and internet-wireless combination to the findU server and then every 15 minutes, the entire data set is sent from the findU server to the NOAA MADIS server. The data are checked for quality and then redistributed to users. There are over 500 different user organizations of the CWOP mesonet data. Here is a partial list:"

This station and website are privately owned and operated and should not be considered an officially recognized source of weather information. While care is taken to insure accurate and up to date information, I can't guarantee that all data will be correct and up to date 100% of the time. This website is automatically updated via specialized computer software and is not monitored by a live person at all times. There will be times when the Internet is down, the power is out for an extended time or a computer hardware or station problem arises that will interrupt service temperately.

Siting Information

The integrated sensor suite (ISS) is located out in the open about 28 feet from the nearest large object. Included in the suite are temperature, humidity, rain collector, UV and solar radiation sensors. The temperature and humidity sensors are located inside the 24 hour fan aspirated radiation shield at 5 feet above ground level (AGL). Above those are the heated rain collector, UV and solar radiation sensors at about 6 feet AGL. The anemometer is located about 40 feet away at 34 feet AGL and 21 feet above the structure it's attached too. This height puts it above the urban canopy layer where the wind is very turbulent and erratic due to obstructions such as buildings and trees.
