In March 1993, four staff and nine students, including myself, from Castle Valley Academy near Moab Utah went on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic to help out at a small school near the capital city of Santa Domingo. We were also accompanied by another group from Eden Valley near Loveland Colorado. Together we helped build a combination cafeteria/girls dorm for the little Seventh-day Adventist school there. We were there for three weeks. On the weekends we went out into the local villages in the area and helped out in their Sabbath school and church programs. Sabbath afternoons were spent visiting the local people. We had two days, if I remember correctly, to go to the beach and to go shopping in the capital city of Santa Domingo, which was quite an experience! Below are some pictures of the trip. These were taken with an old film camera and then scanned from the prints so they aren't that great. Click for larger images |

Some of the local village people posing with a few of our group. Independence Day parade in a near by town. A newly built house where a few of us stayed while there. Here we have a guard standing at the center of the building where the cross structures intersect. Inside the box behind the guard is said to be Christopher Columbus's ashes. There are four guards, one on each side. They are not allowed to to speak to you or smile or anything. They each hold a bayonet. Victor Sasek playing in the mud. This was so much fun! It was just like I had always imagined with the warm blue water and white sand. We all got toasted in the sun that day! I had a lot of fun snorkeling. The guy on the left can be seen trying to sell his goods to the tourist. |
Our group with the building in the background. Left to right: Mike Leibelt, Vern Wheeler (Principal), Crystal Followell, Chris Hakanson, Mandi Chaloupek, Mark Seibert, Rachel Jones, David Davidson, Natasha Bell, Alice Marsh, Victor Sasek, Alvin Marsh. Children's Sabbath School in a near by village. A Sabbath afternoon walk visiting the local people. This is where Christopher Columbus first landed when he came this direction. The light on top of this huge building will shine 40 miles out to see. They have to cut the power to part of the city of Santa Domingo to power it up. The building is shaped like a cross and the entire top is lined with upward shining lights so on a cloudy night a cross can be seen projected on the clouds. I was able to sea this from about 30 or 40 miles away where we were at the school. It was quite impressive! Another shot of the inside of the lighthouse. This was my first and last time to lay block. I have a good respect for block layers, it's not the easiest thing I have done. Another shot of the beach and ocean.
